A whisky-and-splash comic chaser for the godawful 2000s. Anglican Seinfeld. Wodehouse with more sex, Waugh with more heart. Who's for a bit of what we're having, a perfect corker of a Brit-American cocktail, with a happy ending for all time? When his alluring wife Deborah bolts with Benedict Hoepplewhite, young schoolteacher Chesterfield must accept the iron dictates of his family code no gentleman subjects a woman to the indignity of divorce.A gentleman needn't, however, take it entirely lying down. Whether allying with a lesser evil (the Mafia) to take down Hoepplewhite, "chucking a dummy" in a French bistro to foil Deborah's grab for the rumoured family fortune, pimping Deborah to his randy retired Marine father Jack, or mapping strategy with his ghostly bourbon-tippling British mum Daphne, Chesterfield's keen for action. But who'd have thought that winsome green-eyed kindergarten teacher Carrie Hahn would so perfectly match with him in zest for mischief?
The Chesterfield Hours Gwyn Parry Books
The Chesterfield Hours is a fun read. The dialog echoes a style from another place and time. After a few pages, though, you'll enjoy reading that style as much as the author must have enjoyed writing in it. Like many of us, our "noble" (?) protagonist is oft offended by the cruelty and crudeness of our world and he tells us so - in his own throwback style. Even so, our hero never becomes a sappy nostalgist or windmill-piercing buffoon - and Mr. Parry's writing never gets too cute. As the book jacket boasts, the female characters are also very well drawn I thought. As our hero reminds us, we are "ever living with our worries, and always surprised by joy." This book is a little joy, a jolly good romp, and becomes a real page-turner before all is settled.

The Chesterfield Hours Gwyn Parry Books Reviews
Divided into three parts (books), this short novel is entertaining and nicely written. Grounded in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, The Chesterfield Hours introduces memorable characters and a couple of intriguing plot twists. Being sorry to get to the end is compensated by anticipation of new offerings by Gwyn Parry.
The Chesterfield Hours was a very enjoyable read. The dialogue really moves the story along and has has an unusual touch to it that reminds me of the old BBC/PBS show "Butterflies are Free". I highly recommend it for a fun break from the heavier material often covered by book clubs. It's now up on the schedule for mine.
I thought this book was one of the funniest books I have read in quite a while, although I must admit it caters to a definite taste. It is a tongue-in-check story of a teacher who becomes smitten with one of his fellow teachers. It is very much in the vein of British comedies, with quirky characters throughout and even a ghost thrown in.
